Can Myopia Lead to Blindness?
Myopia is a refractive error of our eyes. It is caused due to excessive elongation of the eye balls. In some cases, it could be due to a less flexible eye lens. For us to see an image, the light from the object should fall on the retina. However, in case of myopic eyes, the light falls in front of the retina.
This is not an illness. It is a disorder, which has proven and tested corrective measures. The vision for distant objects is blurred. The nearer objects seem clearer. The sooner the corrective measures are adopted, the better. With age and increased eye-strain, the refractive error increases. This can even lead to blindness. This is a rare occurrence, when high myopia evolves into degenerative or pathological myopia. A high myopia can also cause complications like glaucoma, cataract and retinal detachment.
When the eyeball elongates, the retina gets stretched. In this course of stretching, a hole or a tear is developed. The fluid penetrates through this hole. The fluid fills up behind the retina, causing a pressure. This pressure, in time, removes the retina from the surrounding tissue. This is what happens in retinal detachment, leading to blindness.
Myopia can be a symptom for night blindness or Nyctalopia. This is an inherited malfunctioning of the rod-cells in our retina. This is usually characterised by low vision under dim light. So, myopia can accelerate the degeneration of night vision. Also, in some causes an untreated myopic condition leads to night blindness.
As per Social Security Administration and insurance companies, a person is termed disabled, when he/she cannot perform one or more daily routine activities. Myopia can be corrected using glasses, contact lenses and corrective laser surgeries. This cannot be termed as a disability or a visual impairment.
Studies have suggested that hereditary factors lead to near-sightedness. However, the impact of genes can be balanced out or controlled by a healthy diet and lifestyle from childhood, onwards. Make it a strict practice that, viewing posture of kids for anything, should be such that, they do not lean too close to the object, be it television or books or toys. Encourage lots of outdoor activities under sunlight and diet rich in low-glycaemic foods.
